One part is pure — the pure unit of painting as such; the other part consists of the objective theme, known as content....By working at Impressionism, I learned that an objective image was never one of its concerns. If there was still a likeness, it was only because the painter had not yet found a form that would portray painting 'as such,' without evoking associations with nature and objects, without being an illustration or story, but a form that was a completely new creative fact, a new reality, a new truth.
